Neville barely concentrated on his work. It was the third time one of the particularly vicious plants bit him.
"What is wrong with you?" Hermione asked, nudging him in the side. "You’re supposed to be the teacher."
"Yes, but…" Neville sighed. It was Bring Your Family to Herbology Day, and Neville hadn’t expected Rose Weasley to bring her uncle Charlie. The man was an expert in all things dragons and magical herbology.
"You know he keeps looking at you too," Hermione said with a giggle.
"Who?"
"Oh, you’re playing dumb now?"
Neville shrugged. "Let’s just get through the lesson before I get sent to the hospital wing."
"Right. I bet Charlie would love to take you there."
"Hermione!" Neville hissed.
Thankfully, an hour later, the presentation was over, and Neville and Hermione had survived teaching a room full of aunts, uncles and other family members about what their little ones were learning at Hogwarts.
Hermione dragged Neville to the pub afterwards, insisting it was a treat for surviving the day. He finished his second pint and was just about to leave when a husky voice, full of warmth and something distinctly more dangerous, spoke beside him.
"Get you another, Neville?"
Neville turned around, but before he could answer, Hermione spoke for him.
"Of course. I was just leaving! I’m glad you’ll keep him company."
Before Neville had a chance to do anything, Hermione was gone.
And somehow, he and Charlie ended up sitting at a table, sharing a pitcher of lager, while Neville found himself completely lost in Charlie’s eyes.
As they parted for the evening, Charlie kissed Neville's hand before Disapparting to his home. Neville stood there, a little out of focus. Could he dare ask Charlie out for dinner?
He had to wonder if he was brave enough.
